Researchers: ERC €619 million Starting Grant call open today!

Today, we celebrate the launch of the Starting Grants for researchers, the first grants under the Research and Innovation Framework Programme, Horizon Europe.

Today, we celebrate the launch of the Starting Grants for researchers, the first grants under the Research and Innovation Framework Programme, Horizon Europe.

A few days ago, the European Commission launched the Work Programme 2021 for the European Research Council, the first one under Horizon Europe. This first round is represented by three main calls for proposals aimed to help researchers develop frontier research actions. Their total budget is €1.9 billion, whereas the total budget for the whole length of the programme is about 16 billion, 22% more than what it was in Horizon 2020. This grant increase from Horizon 2020 to Horizon Europe is proof of the compromise of the EU to support researchers and their innovative ideas.

The Starting Grants are aimed at early-career scientists with a few years’ experience since the completion of their PhD. Receiving such a grant should help them start their own independent research team or programme. Any research field is available for funding and the location is limited to the EU Member States or the Associated Countries.

The deadline to apply is 8 April.

What grants are available?

  • Starting Grant, application period 25 February – 8 April. For early-career scientists.
  • Consolidator Grant, application period 11 March – 20 April. For researchers who are consolidating their own independent research team or programme
  • Advanced Grant, application period 20 May – 31 August. For leading advanced investigators.
