Dear Reader,

After New Year’s Eve you usually might have a couple of days to rest at home, doing nothing before going back to work. In these days one thing might begin to occupy our minds: are there any close deadlines or anything that cannot be postponed any longer? Submission deadlines, travels or heaven forbid, a financial audit?

By the time you are reading this issue, the first days of the year are over, and the procrastination temptations have instead turned into busy work. We are actually in the same boat: full of meetings, deadlines, many scheduled take-offs and landings.

Already when booking your next flights, you may wonder whether the business class flight ticket is eligible in your Horizon 2020 project. Or, if you are preparing employment contracts, you might be wondering what requirements your in-house consultant contracts must meet in FP7 and Horizon 2020 projects.

As you see, financial management and reporting in Horizon 2020 projects is raising many issues, therefore at our first course in 2016 in Vienna we are going to answer all of these recurring questions. If you wish to learn the whole story about H2020 financial management, you can join this 2-day Master of Finance and Administration course. Or if you are an EARMA member, you might meet us in Brussels to learn more about the financial management and reporting of your H2020 project, our special training course sponsored by EARMA and restricted to the its members.

Check our website to find out the details of our training courses for 2016: we hope to see you soon!

? From FP7 to Horizon 2020: An ex post, forward-looking evaluation
Valentina Zuri

In November 2015, the independent High Level Expert Group has released its report containing an ex post evaluation of the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research, as required by the European Parliament Decision and European Council decision setting up FP7. In early 2016 the Commission will publish its response. The objective of this Group was to evaluate the effectiveness of FP7 and its implementation, analysing the main achievements and shortcomings of this Programme, with a view to providing recommendations for Horizon 2020 and all future FPs.

? The failed H2020 project proposal and the phoenix bird
Balázs Kozák

The last weeks and days prior to proposal submission are the most demanding and exhausting during proposal development, therefore we need a highly motivated and determined team to accomplish the submission.

The evaluation process takes place in the following few months which shall not be idle in terms of project development. Although we cannot enhance our proposal anymore, we may continue having good ideas which would have been great to include in the proposal. So, do not stop thinking about it, write down your valuable, new ideas after submission, but bear in mind that the proposal is submitted. Get used to it. Full stop.
