Dear Reader,

We are happy to provide you once more with the most recent news from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation world.

The latest addition to the funding programme concerns Georgia, who has signed an agreement with the European Commission (represented by Carlos Moedas) to officially become a partner in the research and innovation programme. Georgian entities will now be able to participate in Horizon 2020 as an Associated Country: check now opportunities for research and innovation projects with this new partner!

New partnerships are established also with the other side of the Atlantic Ocean: Commissioner Moedas and the Canadian Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, have recently signed a new agreement to further share knowledge on the Atlantic Ocean on its two opposite coasts. The success of Horizon 2020 projects funded under the “Blue Growth” calls has encouraged this collaboration, and more coordinated research might be expected.

If you want to take full advantage of these arising opportunities, but do not know where to start, our Proposal Development courses can be a good kickoff for your performance in the European research landscape: come to Budapest next June for an intensive 2-day course or a more thorough 5-days Lab at our headquarters in Graphisoft Park.

You should not be discouraged by a recent proposal underscoring – practice makes a researcher perfect! And, in case you found procedural errors or even inconsistencies in the Evaluation Summary Report, a redress procedure is actually available for Horizon 2020: learn more about it in Istvan’s latest blogpost.

We hope you will enjoy this issue and, as usual, remain available for your questions or comments.

First Interreg Central Europe projects approved

Interreg Central Europe will fund 35 new cooperation projects following the first call for proposals. ERDF co-financing of around 70.5 million Euro will be transferred to project partnerships in the coming years.

In its meeting the programme monitoring committee selected 35 project proposals for funding. In total 620 applications were submitted in the first call - out of which 91 were invited to submit full applications. The successful project partnerships are now contracted and will soon start their activities addressing regional challenges in the fields of innovation, low-carbon economy, environment, culture and transport.

What it takes to succeed in FET-Open

FET-Open funds joint international science and technology at an early stage to foster radically new technological possibilities. The programme aims at research that goes beyond what is currently known or even imagined. Therefore, it does not prescribe any research themes, is open to all sciences and disciplines and encourages unconventional collaborations. A rigorous bottom-up selection process is in place to establish a diverse portfolio of projects.

An insider’s view to redress in Horizon 2020
Istvan Pari

There is a standard mechanism in the Horizon 2020 proposal evaluation process (similarly to the previous framework programmes) that is not frequently discussed and covered compared to other aspects of the same sequence: the redress procedure.

There are three possible outcomes of an Evaluation Summary Report (ESR) sent by the EC to inform the consortium how their proposal performed. The best case scenario is when your scores are flying high and you are informed that based on these results your proposal has reached the stage of Grant Agreement preparation. In this case you are happy and you proceed accordingly.

Novel methods for energy efficiency in buildings: Horizon 2020 IMPRESS project
Irene Ramirez

Despite the efforts dedicated and the measures implemented to improve and achieve a more sustainable European building sector, it seems like not enough has been done to meet the energy and climate goals established by the EU.

There is evidence that the new buildings are not a potential market anymore. As a consequence, existing buildings have become the main target due to the fact that through their renovation, a large amount of energy savings could potentially be obtained. A really ambitious and idyllic target could be to achieve that the entire European building stock comprises Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) by 2050.
